Thank you for attending the 2021 Magee-Womens Summit.
On November 16-18, 2021, scientific and clinical innovators convened, virtually and in person, to transform women’s health and reproductive biology in the 21st century. As the premier meeting in women’s health, the Magee-Womens Summit harnessed cross-disciplinary innovations and paved the way for a new generation of visionary research.
The 2021 Summit themes were Healthy Beginnings, Shaping Metabolism, and Healthy Mind Through Transitions. The three-day conference began with an afternoon dedicated to advocacy on November 16, then moved to two full days of research and clinically focused keynote talks and panel discussions on November 17 and 18.
Also included was the announcement of the Magee Prize, a $1 million prize for collaborative and transformative research within women’s and reproductive sciences.
The Magee Prize
The Magee Prize was established in 2018 as a global award designed to be a catalyst for transformational research in women’s health and reproductive biology. It funds a collaborative team whose research could improve lives around the world. Based on a transdisciplinary collaboration between a Magee-Womens Research Institute scientist, and researchers anywhere in the world, the prize provides funding support for 2-3 years.
On November 17, 2021, the prize was awarded to an international team led by Pamela Moalli, M.D., Ph.D., director of urogynecology and pelvic reconstruction surgery at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and MWRI. The team is working to develop new biomaterials to repair tissue loss in women with compromised vaginal structure and function. The first prize was awarded at the inaugural summit in October, 2018 to an international team of scientists focused on ground-breaking research into the connection between placental abnormalities and congenital heart disease.
The Magee Prize is made possible through a gift from the Richard King Mellon Foundation.Â
